After leaving school I gained a
second-class degree in music, spent three years
working for DHSS and then managed
home and family full-time until I trained in
Therapeutic Counselling in Dartington,
Devon. I gained my Diploma in 2000, aged 45.
At the core of my training was self-enquiry,
including in-depth personal therapy. This became a
process of getting to know and
forming relationship with different parts of myself that had
lain dormant and forgotten for
years. My curiosity and deepening relationship within myself continues:
I am committed to on-going personal
exploration, both for my own sake and for the sake of my work with clients.
Since qualifying, I have built a
private practice in central Exeter at the Gandy Centre,
a quiet space in the heart of the
city.
Further training includes Somatic
Trauma Therapy with Babette Rothschild
(author of 'The Body Remembers'
and 'Help for the Helper'); and The Boarding Experience with Nick Duffell
(author of 'The Making of Them').
I work with ex-servicemen and women
who have asked for support through the organisation
The Long Boat Home:www.thelongboathome.co.uk
I am an active member of Boarding
Concern, an organisation that recognises
the trauma of disrupted attachment
inherent to this peculiarly British form of 'child care'
and the effects of early separation
on intimate relationships: www.boardingconcern.org.uk
In addition, I work on behalf of Gamcare. For any concerns about problem
and addictive gambling, for yourself or someone close to you, see: www.gamcare.co.ukI have recently published 'Does Therapy Work?' (see Publications).
For re-creation, I enjoy listening to and playing music, playing tennis and
riding a Harley-Davidson around France, particularly.
